The short answer
Sometimes yes, but not just anywhere. Small turbines depend on steady wind at the height of the rotor. In many built-up or sheltered places, the wind is too weak or too turbulent, and photovoltaic panels are the safer choice.
What to check first
- The wind at the site: the average speed and how steady it is, at the height where the rotor would be.
- Obstacles: buildings, trees and terrain that create turbulence.
- The height of the tower: a turbine mounted too low produces little and wears out quickly.
- Noise and distances: from the house and from the neighbours.
- Permits: approvals may be needed for tall towers.
- Maintenance: turbines have moving parts, which wear.
Why not on the roof
Mounting a small turbine on the roof of the house is generally not recommended. The wind becomes turbulent close to the building, and vibration and noise are transmitted to the structure. Turbines are usually mounted on a separate tower, in an open spot.
Solar plus wind
In some places the wind is stronger in winter and at night, when the panels produce less. Combining the two can smooth out output, but that is not a rule. A battery helps you keep the energy.
